Choosing the right fabric for your bed linens can be challenging, especially given the multitude of options and the wealth of (at times conflicting) information which is readily available. To assist you in making the right choices and to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep, we have put together a series of informative blog posts on the subject.
In each post we will be shining a light on the technicalities and qualities of each of the fabrics from which your ECRU bespoke luxury bed linens can be created. You can also subscribe to our newsletter to receive guidance, as well as news of limited edition fabrics and exclusive events, directly to your mailbox by sending an email to admin@ecrulinen.com.
What is percale cotton?
Percale cotton refers to fabric made of 100% cotton woven in a traditional basket weave or “one over, one under construction”. The equal number of threads on the surface and underside of the fabric give it a matte finish. This is different from the sateen weave where more threads are placed on the surface of the fabric, resulting in a soft sheen.
Refined and stylish
Percale cotton is crisp and smooth to the touch, much like a cleanly pressed shirt. It gives a fresh, contemporary look to any bedroom, especially paired with modern decorative cushions and a plush throw, yet does not appear too formal. Our percale cotton sheets become softer and softer over time with each wash as the cotton fibres slowly relax, providing the ultimate sleeping experience.
Interesting fact: Cotton is the oldest natural fibre in the world with evidence of it dating back some 8000 years.
The all-rounder
Percale has fabulous breathability making it perfect for the warmer months or for the “warmer” sleeper. It's moisture-absorbing properties are also ideal for the summer period and make it the ideal fabric for a fitted sheet.
